Updated food waste legislation
Delving into the latest food waste legislation
When running a business, rubbish can often be the last thing on your mind but new legislation coming in next year will have an impact on almost every organisation in England. Changes around how businesses get rid of food waste are set to see us all becoming more concerned with what exactly goes into our bins and the potential cost of not following the latest Government guidelines.
Jamie Parker, key account manager at Anglian, looks at the forthcoming legislation and what it may mean for Norwich BID members.
What does the food waste legislation mean for businesses?
Mandatory separate food waste collections
All non-municipal premises will need to arrange for separate food waste collections. This includes businesses with 10+ staff, institutions and other non-residential buildings that generate any food waste.
Presentation of food waste
Food waste will need to be segregated and stored in designated bins, caddies or containers, ready for collection.
Failure to comply
Businesses who do not follow the legislation may face potential penalties. We’re yet to hear exactly what these could be in England – details are due to be announced shortly. However, in Wales, where a similar food waste scheme launched earlier this year, businesses who do not comply run the risk of receiving substantial fines
