ALERT: Business Crime Reduction

ALERT: Norwich’s Business Crime Reduction Scheme

Norwich Business Improvement District  have been working with the National Business Crime Centre, Norfolk Constabulary, and businesses across Norwich to coordinate a response to tackle antisocial behaviour, crime and improve perceptions of safety in the city centre.

ALERT is the business crime reduction partnership (BCRP) for the city, which places an emphasis on sharing intelligence and data, communication and partnership. This is supported by Norfolk Constabulary, Norwich Business Crime Forum members and businesses across the city. The scheme is available free of charge, serving both the daytime and night time economies.

Through ALERT, business owners can:

  • Reduce stock losses
  • Protect staff & customers
  • Detect and deter criminal behaviour
  • Tackle antisocial behaviour
  • Report incidents

ALERT consists of a variety of key resources: the DISC website and app, the ALERT push-to-talk radio service, monthly intelligence briefings through the Norwich Business Crime Forum and free training opportunities.

Join DISC and Help Make Norwich Safer

The Database & Intranet for Safer Communities (DISC) is the FREE, secure, online business crime information sharing platform for Norwich .

The platform bridges the gap between Norfolk Constabulary and the communities they serve with peer-to-peer sharing through reports or instant messaging. Through DISC, we issue alerts, details of upcoming events and e-newsletters containing intelligence reports of identified and unidentified offenders and is a central repository of information used to keep our streets safe.

The platform operates through businesses contributing crucial information about offenders, antisocial behaviour and incidents, providing other businesses with the essential information to prevent travelling crime. DISC is a national platform used by over 450 towns and cities in the UK.

DISC is quick and simple to navigate and use, either through the website or the DISC App, making finding and reporting offences easy. Compliant by design, DISC was built against the Data Protection Act 2018 and GDPR legislation to provide comprehensive ‘technical security’.

We work with the National Business Crime Solution (NBCS), a not-for-profit initiative providing the police and business community with regional and national information to tackle traveling crime. This is integrated directly into DISC.

ALERT Push-to-talk Radio Service

The Norwich BID ALERT radio scheme provides businesses with a secure channel of communication, connecting the city. The scheme is a vital tool for reducing business crime across the city by sharing information of local and persistent offenders, and communicating their direction of travel.

The push-to-talk radio scheme, provided by Link Radio, operates using a mobile data or Wi-Fi connection on IOS/Android handsets or a radio handset, providing greater coverage and reliability, and can be managed through a web app. The new scheme is more accessible, affordable and efficient for Norwich businesses to prevent and reduce crime.

The Norwich Exclusion Notice Scheme

Working together as a community, the Norwich Exclusion Notice Scheme targets local prolific offenders to help protect our shops and staff.

If a person has been subject to three incident reports relating to anti-social behaviour or retail-related crime within a twelve month period by any member of the Partnership, they can be liable to an exclusion from the Partnership. An exclusion from Alert members may last between three and twelve months before being reviewed. If the exclusion is breached, then the incident may be escalated by Norfolk Constabulary. When an excluded person completes their period of exclusion, any personal data is removed. All members of the partnership are enrolled in the exclusion notice scheme.

Norwich Business Crime Survey

This year, we are running a business crime survey to gather information about the types and frequency of crimes affecting businesses in Norwich. It aims to understand the nature and extent of business crime in Norwich, assess the impact of crime on businesses, inform crime prevention strategies, and advocate for additional resources.

If you have a few moments to spare, please participate in the survey and help make the city a safer, more secure place.
